 Scuderia Toro Rosso is a famous team from Italy, which has long been involved in Formula 1. The full name of the auto racing team is Scuderia Toro Rosso and its owner is the Red Bull energy drink company.

The history of Toro Rosso in Formula 1

Until 2005, the auto racing team was called Minardi. It was under this name that it was founded back in 1979. After the concern Red Bull bought out the team, he decided to change its name to make it more responsive to its nationality. Therefore, it was decided to rename to Toro Rosso. Scuderia means the definition of an auto racing team, and Toro Rosso means a red bull. Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi and American Scott Speed ​​in 2006 were pilots of the team Toro Rosso. The same year in Toro Ross there was an incident with other participants about the use of the chassis and the choice of engine. According to the rules of Formula 1, teams have the right to use only the actually designed chassis, or use the developments of those firms that do not take part in competitions. Toro Rosso, for lack of money, abandoned her own making and used a slightly modified chassis of the Red Bull RB1 car. After a long clarification, they decided that this chassis was constructed in 2004 by the team owned by the concern Ford, and does not take part in the championship, so the team was allowed to use the chassis. As for the engine, the team used a 10-cylinder engine, although all have already switched to 8-cylinder. After buying Red Bull teams, competitors protested and demanded a new owner to deliver an 8-cylinder engine, but stumbled upon a failure. As a result, Toro Rosso finished the season in just 9 places out of 11 possible places.

What to expect in the new season from the team Toro Rosso F1?

The current season for the crowd is already the 14th, if we take its new history, starting with the purchase of the Minardi racing team by the Red Bull Concern represented by its creator and boss Dieter Mateschitsa. From the very beginning of his new biography, it was assumed that its director Franz Tost with his racing team will prepare for the “senior team” young promising pilots. In principle, the way it happened, although in the period of the formation of this alliance there were occasional situations when the “young bulls” turned out to be more capable and managed to bypass the “elder brothers” in the not very fast race cars. A vivid example of this can be called the 2008 season, which opened to the racing world of Sebastian Vettel, who, as a debutant, spent his first full season behind the team. It was in that year that the future German star at Monza won its first qualification and its first race, thus providing the team with 6th place in the Cup of Designers for the year. “Red Bull” was forced to be satisfied then only the 7th position.

After Vettel’s transition to the next year, the “senior bulls” of the crowd seemed to go into the shadows for several years. And only from the moment of the appearance of Daniel Rikkiardo in her composition, she again began to give out “ready-made pies” for the festive table of the “Red Bull” concern. Following the Australian, Daniil Kvyat, Max Verstappen and Pierre Gusley were alternately sent to the main “stable”. However, in the case of the Russian, the situation was not as simple as the others. Due to the lack of available seats in the Red Bull, they were forced to take unpopular measures, replacing Kvyat with Verstappen after 4 races. But in any case, all this time, “Toro Rosso” regularly performed the role of training young people to race for the older team.

Last season, another equally important one was added to this role. In connection with the expected transition of the Red Bull to Honda engines, Dieter Mateschitz decided to run the Japanese engines on race cars of the Italian crowd. This season, now both teams of the Red Bull concern will equip their race cars with Honda engines.

However, it is unlikely that the Austrian magnate had a choice. His relations with the French were so complicated that it would hardly have survived another season without the opportunity to fight for the title Mateschitz. And let it be not so simple with Honda, and it is unlikely that from the first season the Red Bull race cars will surely be ahead of Ferrari and Mercedes. But there is at least hope that if the Japanese finally provide a good engine, then, coupled with the best aerodynamics, for which Adrian Newey’s cars have always been famous, Dieter Mateschitsch’s wards will be able to regain their former champion glory. Nevertheless, 4 consecutive champion titles of Sebastian Vettel, earned in the “Red Bull” – this is the page, inscribed forever in the history of Formula 1.

The partnership with Japanese motorists, established at Toro Rosso last season, allows us to hope that this year the race drivers will have more reliable and faster racers than before. And only in the second half, it is possible that the Italian squadron will have to sacrifice its positions at the start for the emergency introduction of new products on the engines in order to carry out the approbation necessary to improve the efficiency of Red Bull power plants. The fact that the personal interests of “Toro Rosso” will be regularly infringed as a result of such sacrifices, no doubt. As a matter of fact, for this purpose the “junior team” was acquired by Dieter Mateschitz so that the main team of Red Bull could effectively improve its potential.

Debutant and young “veteran”

Before the beginning of this season, Toro Rosso once again faced a difficult choice: who to put in their cars. Due to the sudden departure of Daniel Rikkiardo from the Red Bull to the Renault, the older team urgently needed a fast racer to replace him. Of the two potentially available candidates for the role of team-mate Max Verstappen, the choice naturally fell on the Frenchman Pierre Gasley. He is fast enough in qualifications, and certain “recklessness” in races among the “young bulls” is a concept familiar to the leadership of the Austrian stable. For the last 5 years, Dr. Helmut Marko, the main recruitment consultant for the racing concern Dieter Mateschitz, has preferred to drive this kind of riders behind the wheel of the Red Bull. It doesn’t matter that often they didn’t even finish at Toro Rosso junior for two years. So it was with Kvyat, then with Verstappen, now with Extinguished.

By the way, having won the duel with his partner with a score of 29: 4 last year, Pierre actually buried the further career of his teammate Brandon Hartley. From the very beginning, the appearance of this New Zealander in Formula 1 at the end of 2017 was a rather strange choice of Mr. Marko. The principle of “bezrybe and cancer – fish.” But Brandon did not help the experience of endurance racing, where he twice became the champion and won the famous Le Mans 24 Hours race. He was barely 30 years old when, at the end of the season, he simply did not have a place, because instead of him debutant Alex Elbon, the bronze medalist of the Formula 2 last year, was taken.

Thus, Hartley had to leave the tough and ruthless Red Bull system. By the way, according to the information we have this year, Brandon has already joined the SMR Racing team, and in the endurance championship he will replace the Formula One world champion Briton Jenson Button in the Russian crew. The young “veteran” Daniil Kvyat will be chasing a couple with Elbon in Toro Rosso. A strange combination of words, but the Russian pilot at the start of this season will not be 24 years old. However, he has almost 4 Formula 1 seasons, 72 races, which already had bronze and silver podiums.

A year and a half ago, when Daniil lost his place in “Toro Rosso”, where he had previously, in truth, been unjustly expelled from Red Bull in favor of the young Dutch talent of Max Verstappen, they all thought that this would be the end of the Russian racing driver’s career. But experienced and knowledgeable races people understood that Kvyat’s problems were not in his lack of speed, but rather in his psychological breakdown. Still would! Bypassing his more experienced team-mate Daniel Rikkiardo on points in 2015, winning the silver podium in China in the third race of the 2016 season, and then suddenly, under the pretext of an allegedly stupid accident in Sochi to be exiled back to Toro Rosso, many would not have survived nerves.

Later, a few weeks after what happened, when the emotions gave way to prudence and a sober analysis of the situation, it became clear that with any outcome of that ill-fated Russian Grand Prix 2016 Quat would still have given way to Verstappen. I can only allow that if Dani hit the podium in that race in Sochi, his replacement with Max would have been arranged in the form of an allegedly temporary experiment performed by the Red Bull management. And the accident only gave a reason to formally justify this castling. The appearance of Kvyat in the Formula One paddock at the beginning of last season in the Ferrari overalls surprised many. There are not scattered frames, even if these frames accidentally fall into their field of view. Even the leadership of Toro Rosso was not in doubt about the speed and talent of the Russian pilot, from which, on the orders of Dr. Marco, Dan was “asked” to leave, making room for Pierre Gusli. Besides, who grew up in Italy, where his parents took him at the age of 9, embodying the dream of his son’s racing career, he is fluent in Italian. And for his first 4 formula seasons, Dania also mastered English perfectly. That is why the place of the test pilot on the simulator in the “Ferrari” Kvyat went quite naturally.

And as a result, without being lost outside the paddock, Kvyat was in demand when the “Toro Rosso” again faced the acute question about the pilot for their car for the season 2019. After the greeting, I asked him what was called without a microphone: what can we and his fans expect about his future. And even then Quat was reassuringly assured that it was necessary to wait for good news, and that was in Formula 1. It was only the beginning of July. If we evaluate the potential of both pilots of the Toro Rosso today, then, perhaps, the Russian driver looks more preferable.
